48 hours in Amsterdam

Music is my e v e r y t h i n g

A few years ago I stumbled upon Lord of the Lost during a youtube browsing session and after listening to just one song, I hopped straight over to Amazon and placed an order for their latest CD. Over the next few months I bought or was gifted the rest of their back catalogue and it wasn't long before they firmly wedged themselves in my list of my *favourite ever bands*. I've never fallen so hard for a band so quickly, I blummin' adore them.

This year I made it my mission to see them live, one way or another. So when their latest tour was announced, I pounced on tickets for their show in the Netherlands like a crazy person!

As this trip would be our first time in Amsterdam, we decided to make the whole thing into a bit of a mini break. Miss E stayed with her grandma, the first time I've ever spent more than an evening away from her but it was so good to 'adult' and also to catch up on some sleep. We missed her so much though!

The trip was a bit of a whirlwind but I wanted to share some of my highlights....

The hotel. We stayed at the newly opened Hilton hotel at Schipol airport and it was probably one of the most architecturally beautiful, super clean, comfortable and insanely welcoming hotels we've ever stayed at. The hotel was super quiet, we found that it was such a relaxing stay.... very impressive when you consider the hotel is located just a few minutes walk from all the hustle and bustle of the airport. I've been yearning for that comfortable king size bed ever since we got home... it was beautiful!

Sipping cocktails gone midnight at the hotel bar. So good. And of course, Heineken.... all the Heineken. Everywhere. All weekend. Even on the plane.

Lord of the Lost. Combichrist. Of course. Absolute bloody dream come true. Falling in love with a band I've never actually seen live before is a bit of a new one for me but my word, Lord of the Lost absolutely did not disappoint. They were everything I had imagined they'd be, their enthusiasm and energy is so infectious. They certainly know how to put on a show. I love them even more now and I didn't think that was possible!
Combichrist were absolutely amazing too (so glad I get to see them again in a few weeks!), this goes without saying. So good. So, so good! I probably should mention that Filter were also playing although i'm not really a fan, the husband is and he really enjoyed seeing them!

Canal cruising. We spent the morning seeing the main sights of Amsterdam via canal boat which was a super way to see as much as possible in the short amount of time we had. The tour lasted a good couple of hours complete with an English speaking guide which I thought was superb for the 9 euros we each paid!

Shopping. Shopping in Amsterdam was ace. The range of shops in Schipol airport was fantastic too. We didn't buy much, or indeed have much time to spend money but from what we saw... we loved! I love a good souvenir and so we stocked up on Miffy goodies and chocolate for Miss E and some Delftware bits for us.

I can't deny that we spent a much of our trip eating and drinking our way round both Amsterdam and Amstelveen. My favourites were the Dutch breakfasts in the airport and sitting out on the terrace of a cafe in Dam Square devouring the most amazing baguettes and freshly squeezed juices whilst people watching. Lovely! Also, the locals were ace. Everyone we met and talked to was so friendly, helpful and polite!

Finally, transport! We found navigating our way around Amsterdam very, very easy! Everything was so straightforward and the journeys we experienced were calm, clean, reliable and very enjoyable. We hopped on bus in the evening from the airport into Amstelveen to get to P60, the venue where we saw Lord of the Lost. Relatively cheap and super speedy.... it was all so surprisingly simple!
