If you know me, you'll know I love my food! Christmas is such a great time for eating too. I love scouting out local craft beer, delicious condiments and tasty snacks ready for those festive food fests that happen all too frequently at our house! Recently I was very kindly offered the chance to try out a selection of locally made pork pies made by Vale of Mowbray*. It was an opportunity I just couldn't say no to!
Proudly baked in Yorkshire since 1928, Vale of Mowbray pork pies are made to traditional recipes using the freshest ingredients. Classic hot water pastry, tender cured pork, the perfect blend of herbs and spices, a variety of inventive and traditional fillings.... yum!
Now, pork pies are very much a treat for me and usually only a treat I'd devour on summer picnics or at Christmas time. I am a huge, huge fan of them though and when I received the box of pies at my door, I'm going to admit I dived straight in!
I received a couple of varieties of pork pie to sample, the large pork pie with egg and mini packs of cheese & pickle pork pies. I'm such a fan of hidden fillings, they offer a nice twist on the traditional British meat pie and always go down well at parties.
The first pie I sampled was the large pork pie with egg. Now, these pies are definitely not to be tackled on your own. They are huge and just perfect for sharing! Let's all admire the depth of this pie and how delicious the pastry looks....
Once you cut into the pie, you can see the quality of the meat which has been packed inside the pastry. It's such a let down when you cut into a pork pie and the lid has puffed up, leaving half of it is empty so I'm pleased that this wasn't the case here! The egg is cooked to perfection and perfectly preserved inside the pie. How they do that, I don't know!
We enjoyed this pie with with salad, cheese and chutney as an evening meal and it went down really well with everyone. There was plenty left too for the following day, these pies are super filling and very tasty too!
Next up was the snack pack of cheese and pickle pork pies. Now, these ones were definitely my favourite, they were absolutely lovely and perfectly managable. Cheese & pickle are two of my truest loves in life and blended perfectly into these bite-size pork pies, it makes for an absolutely delicious snack! Perfect for packed lunches or picnics, these pies are packaged in pairs and are great for taking outdoors. Great for sharing or as an indulgent treat for yourself!
The pickle keeps the pie nice and moist and really adds to the flavour of the meat. The pastry, as with both pies, was perfect too. Not too dry or crispy, beautiful!
Admittedly, pork pies are not the most feminine of snacks but I blummin' love them! They are such a treat! There are so many ways you can eat them, you can even enjoy them warmed up in the oven though I haven't tried this as of yet. I imagine they would be just as tasty.
