The Highwayman, Derbyshire // Beefeater

On Saturday evening we drove out to Eastmoor in Derbyshire to enjoy a delicious family meal at the 'The Highwayman' Beefeater who have recently unveiled a brand new menu to complement their gorgeous refurbishment.

I won't lie, i'm quite the fan of the various eateries that adjoin Premier Inn hotels. The Highwayman Beefeater is a new one for me and arriving at the restaurant I was pleasantly surprised by the rural setting. The restaurant has gorgeous views out into Derbyshire and I imagine it's an amazing place to sit outside and enjoy a meal on a warm summer evening!

Inside the restaurant I was impressed by the clean modern interior with appropriate artwork hung on the walls, lovely lighting and a spacious dining area. Miss E loved spotting all the pictures of cows whilst we waited to be seated!

We found The Highwayman to be incredibly child friendly, always a big relief if we go for an evening meal out.... it makes things so much easier! Miss E was presented with an activity book and crayons to keep her busy whilst we had a look at the menu. She's a huge fan of Mr Men and we loved the Mr Men themed children's menu which had heaps of choice for little ones.

We started the meal with with a sharing plate of spicy loaded nachos. The starter consisted of crunchy corn tortilla chips heaped with melted cheese, fire roasted green chilli salsa, tomato salsa, spring onions, tomatoes, sour cream & chive and red onion and served with spicy fundido cheese sauce. I love a messy starter and this was blummin' delicious!

The children's 'Mr. Men Little Miss' menu is fantastic. There is a 1, 2, or 3 course option and the menu is so varied that you'll be sure to find something for your little one to enjoy! Miss E can be quite a fussy eater and often will just pick at meals so we were amazed to see that she polished off most of her 'Mr Small's little cod bites' meal. It must have been good!

For the main course I opted for the 'triple burger' which is part of the new menu. The burger was served in a warm brioche bun and stacked with slow-cooked pulled beef, beef rashers, fried onions, salad and horseradish soft cheese. Served with coleslaw and spicy fries (very spicy but equally tasty!). Burgers are always a bit of a treat for me and I really enjoyed this one, it was so flavoursome and cooked just right!
My only complaint about this meal is that it was served on a board. Personally I really dislike this in restaurants, it makes for an unnecessarily messy dining experience! Gimme a plate, dammit!

My husband chose the smothered chicken melt for his main course which consisted of chargrilled chicken breast glazed with smoky BBQ sauce, loaded up with streaky bacon and Monterey Jack cheese and served with triple cooked chips, chunky slaw and a side salad. He had no problems polishing it off and said it was delicious. I must admit, those chips looked so good!

I really enjoyed our meals and honestly, I was probably a bit too full for dessert but I was so tempted by the menu that we ordered one anyway. Naughty!
I went for the tropical sundae which was such a treat. Coconut ice cream, mango sorbet, caramelised fresh pineapple and rum syrup.... yum! It was a huge portion but I don't regret ordering it! My husband went for the more sensible option of the lemon posset which again is part of the new menu. It looked fantastic and I'm a sucker for an all-butter shortbread finger but they were gone before I could steal a nibble!

Again, the options for kids desserts are super. Ranging from a healthy fruit salad to cookies and ice cream, there's a bit of everything there to suit everyone. We chose the mini chocolate challenge for Miss E which is kind of a 'create your own pudding' option with ice cream, soft fudge brownies, marshmallows and chocolate sauce. She had the best time dipping stuff in the chocolate sauce. Very messy but great fun!

Eating out with a toddler can be a bit of a minefield sometimes but as staff were so helpful and the food was served with absolute minimal wait, we had an absolutely lovely time! Little things like speedy service and thoughtful touches such as children's cutlery really do make a difference. We wouldn't hesitate to visit The Highwayman again for another meal soon! Especially with a view like this from the garden....

* We were guests of The Highwayman Beefeater but all words are my own.
